By modifying these sources of information, cells assemble by patterning their environment over time, where we define the environment as the space outside the cell and other cells. For example, some types of tissue form as a result of free cells following chemical gradients (chemotaxis), navigating along specific paths towards destinations which are indicated by higher concentrations of a signalling chemical (Figure 3.6).
